Restwasserstudie Opponitz: Modul Phytobenthos, Wasserchemie und Umweltbedingungen (Residual flow Opponitz: Phytobenthos, water chemistry and enivronmental conditions)

PI: T Hein

With the EU Water Framework Directive coming into effect in 2000, a Europe-wide comprehensive body of legislation has been set up which demands the establishment of the good ecological status of the different water bodies until 2015. The current project deals with a 33 km long reach of the Ybbs between Göstling and Opponitz, Lower Austria, where the problem of residual flow (due to a hydropower plant) together with additional hydro-morphological deficits (channel regulations), reduce the ecological integrity. The aim of the study is to define an adequate and ecological justified residual discharge for the affected stream reach which helps to restore the good ecological status via an adequate and ecologically justiefied residual discharge, and, at the same time, secures the long term efficiency of the hydropower plant.

The project is carried out in cooperation with scientists from the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU), who deal with the aspects of fishery and conduct the hydrological modelling. The research at the Wasserkluster Lunz focuses on the analyses of the phytobenthic community and productivity in connection with the abiotic conditions during normal and residual flow.
